will a gear box from a mk2 180 fit my mk1?

Absolutely no differences as far as I am aware.

The mk1 and mk2 are mechanically the same except the air con may be different.

As long as its deffo a ZS180 gearbox then you are fine, they are identical but not all PG1 boxes are the same, internal ratios are different depending on application and then there are different belhousings and gear cases too, so a PG1 K4 will not fit where a PG1 KV6/L4 should go, L4 (diesel) will physically fit on a KV6 engine but ratios will be all over.
