Does anyone know why some of the classic older colours have been ceased - and if its still possible to order a car in one?

Colours I refer too are the Hawaii Blue, the Purple and the older light blue that looks almost like a non metalic trophy blue? Sorry I dont know many of the names ;)

I noticed the old grey has sort of made a come-back in the form of XPG, but no black since the early 90's?

I only ask because I think some of those colours would look good on a Zed... esp the Hawaii greeny-blue and the purple!

I had a R200 Coupe in the Purple, it was stunning and would have had the ZS in it had it been available (As it was I had the choice of Red/Blue or Yellow and the manager at the dealership did mention that if I wanted to wait he believed there was going to be an Anthracite very soon - oh the downfalls of jumping in at the beginning)

No, British racing cars pre war and indeed up to the early sixties were painting in BRG. German cars were silver, French blue and Italian red.

I am old enough to remember Lotus, BRMs and Vanwells in F1 and they were painted BRG. This was NEVER EVER mettalic and was a dark rich green. Calling the MGR colour BRG is like calling the fat dogo bird in the last series of Big Brother, Marilyn Monroe.

You can call it what you like but that doesn't make it correct.

Cheers

Patrick

PS A bit like calling all swear word profane!

I once had an Austin Healey Sprite in Blaze Red (orange) - very 1970s, along with Pageant Blue (bright blue) and Damask (burgundy)!

But one of the nicest 'old' colours was Tartan Red - remember all the 1960s Mini Coopers and Austin Healey 3000s that Abingdon built for rallying? Well that was Tartan Red!

Also used to like the Rover Vitesse in Moonraker Blue! Pretty sure that's what it was called?

I think you will find that the paint manufacture's give the colours there names and not MGR.
Is this the same reason that the colours get added / dropped?

What ever happened to that gorgeous mint green you used to see on the Coupe Turbo and the cabriolet?

I love that colour....don't know what it's called though.
Nat - I think thats the Hawaii Blue / green I was reffering too... a Zed in that colour would look pretty good I think?

Going back in time

Two colours Rover have dropped lately are two blues, the Atlantic Blue and Steel Blue, both were very nice mid blues. All that's left if the flat Oxford Blue, the metallic light blue (which looks awful) and the Trophy Blue which is very arresting !! :)

These are Rover colours from the 1960s and 1970s not mentioned.

Almond Yellow - a mid yellow, kind of looked like the contents of your hankie. Not a nice colour, Big Chris' P6B in Lock Stock was this colour. Usually faded after exposure to prolonged sunlight.

Tobacco Leaf - a mid brown, looked like the contents of the toilet bowl after a night on the lager.

Mexico Brown - a very nice deep, rich, dark brown, polishes up very well indeed with a lot of deep shine.

Monza Red - the loudest red available, similar to Ferrari Red, a very shiny colour.

Arden Green - Still available today and very close colour to Brooklands Green, the original BRG.

Cameron Green - A lighter green, very nice.

Artic White - a bright white, will show up the smallest amount of rust.

Ivory White - more a cream white, very nice for white.

Paprika - best avoided, an almost orange colour, the 1970s, the decade that style forgot.

City Grey - a mid grey, looks nicer on the car than you'd think, looked surprisingly good with red interior.

Lunar Grey - a very light grey with a hint of green about it, a very odd colour but strangely very nice (ok, that might be purely subjective)

Zircon Blue - not the deep blue, again a mid-blue, looked prettiest of all on the Series 1 P6 without the vinyl roof. Looked very good with the cream interior.
