Which looks best? Mk1 or Mk2?

Hi All,

In recent posts in the "new & used" thread, I was staggered to find that some people actually prefer the look of the Mk2 to the Mk1   Dufflecoat seems equally surprised that anyone could possibly prefer the Mk1 to the Mk2

So, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, what does everyone else think?

If you could order a brand new 260 today, would you go for a Mk1 or a Mk2, just on how they look?

Oh look! 100% so far in favour of the Mk1! I'd say that's pretty conclusive   :beerchug

I hated the Mk2 when it came out, but now I think that in the right colours (dark) it looks far fresher (and more menacing) than the Mk1.

However, the Mk1 still looks good in a "classic" kind of way. Whether the Mk2 will still look good in 4-5 years time, I don't know.

If I had the choice of a mk1 or mk11 at close to prices and condition, I would choose the mk11 any time. Simply because it is always wisest to buy the latest model which has the latest mods. Invariably better residuals also. The crisper lines of the mk11 bumper lines are more modern. The mk1's are looking dated already.

I have to say I lov the looks of the Mk1. Its so much more individual - its got a cheeky pesonality and lloks great. When they brought the Mk11 out I couldnt believe what they`d done - it just looked modern and bland.

However, I`m not quite sure why but the Mk11 looks have grown on me - it does look a bit mean and menacing from some angles.

Following heart I`d choose the Mk1.

But the poll is purely about looks, not mechanical spec.

I doubt this is actually the case? Of course a 2 year old 5 series is going to be worth more than a 6 year old 5 series of the old shape, but what percentage depreciation had the old model suffered when it was 2 years old compared to the new one? I would suspect that the new one depreciated faster, given the outcry from critics when it came out (although personally I loved the new model).

I believe the 911 is another example of this. As I understand it, the 996 is a bit unloved, so at every stage of its life, the 993 has had higher residuals, and the 997 is expected to do so as well.

Again though, not relevant to the aesthetic aspect of the cars :D

Didn't people say that about the chrome bumpered Bs when the rubber bumpers first came out? Needless to say, people now want the chromed ones!

I don't think the Mk1 looks dated so much as it stands out from everything else in the car park, whereas the Mk2 (dependent on the paint) tends to fade more into the background. dddc

Above the bumper line I prefer the Mark I, the grille and twin headlights complement each other well, and the design carries the 'Rover' legacy forward.

However, below the bumper line I prefer the Mark II, the fogs on the Mark I look like an afterthought, on the Mark II the whole thing flows together really nicely.

Alas I had to vote for the Mark 1 as I've got one :D

I don't think residuals, practical thinking etc should come into this poll - it should be purely an aesthetic opinion. I go for Mk 1, although I really like both and there's not much in it. For some strange reason, I find the Mk2 suits the Rover 75 better. I would have liked it if the aggresive stance of the Mk1 was continued on the ZT, and the Mk2 only applied to the 75 - this would have given some further distance between the models, which imho, was maybe needed.

I prefer the mk1 above the bumper line especially the bonnet!,but I would say that wouldn't I!!!. dddc

PS. For those of you not aware my car is fitted with the XPower 500 bonnet, sorry to say that I don't know how to post the pics up but if you ask reverie 158 nicely he may :hannah: .

I voted Mk1 but own a Mk2, I just prefer the twin lights, would convert it but for the zenon's.
Are you sure you can't convert anyway? I've got Xenons on my Mk1, and as far as I can see, the bumper sits flush over the lights, rather than cutting between them. Not sure if it's the same single unit behind the bumper though?

I voted Mark 1 too.

I had the chance of a brand new basic spec Mk2 260 late last year and i never did the deal because i didn't like the exterior as much as the Mark 1 ZT 190 i already had and the diabolical sandpaper dash inside.

To me the Mark 1 looks more menacing - it looks like it goes if you know what i mean. The Mark 2 is undeniably a more homogenous design, with the lines flowing more cohesively, but it has lost some of the 'get out of my way' looks to me. Also, the swept in headlamps and twin kidney shaped grille, despite being a Rover legacy, fit witht he traditional corporate ID of the MG brand - the later revision doesn't (deliberately).

My feelings are that if MGR had survived then thier go at redefining the marque from an aethetic point of view would have worked. But given the recent history the older design is still in the public psyche and is the look they associate with the MG brand image.

Bottom line - Mark 1 looks like an MG to me, the Mark 2 doesn't.

That said, i do like the horizontal spar in the Mark 2 grille (odd, because i hate it on the TF!) and to me the best looking ZT was 'ripsnorter' which is a combination of both. :)

Went for the mk1. I think when you design perfection then you can't impove on it. Should design something completely different. Always thought when they 'facelifted the ZT it was just an exercise to lift the volumes up. Cheap way to increase sales. All that said my next choice of car after the ZT mk1 would be the ZT mk2, then Mazada 6. :)

Mk I. It's obvious!

Those Mk2 bumpers. What's that all about. The "sharp crisp lines" may be more contemporary BUT THERE ARE NO OTHER "SHARP CRISP LINES" ON THE CAR!!! They look like they belong on something else to me & were clearly done as MGR had no cash & needed to make the boneheaded public think they had made a new car.

I nearly missed the boat when I bought my Mk1 & was desparate to get one.

Well... I am honestly totally surprised that people actually like the Mk2  Before anyone starts, that's not deliberate trolling, I really am staggered!

I wonder what people's views will be in 5 or 10 years time?
