Project ZR Evo

Some of you will have seen the evo bits in the workshop recently, but now it's time for the build. I'll just go through the pics and explain along the way.

The donor car was a front and rear smashed (spun) Evo 9 FQ300 (with only 3000miles on it!!). I only got the running gear, and not all of it, the interior and chassis was returned to the seller. The front brakes were missing and a few of the rear suspension arms were bent and the hub carrier broken.

The floorpan was cut out for all the rear suspension mounts and prop mounting.

Picture taken for reference.

The ECU's removed, and you'll see the full wiring loom attacted to the engine still.

Before anything else can be done, the broken parts that need to be used would require fixing.

The timing belt cover was broken, as well as a chip out of the bottom pulley, so this week i got a new timing belt cover from a dealer.

Ive fitted the bottom cover, but also need to sort out the powersteering pump and an aux belt idler which both have bent pulleys.

The gearbox also had broken where the front mount bolts on, so the gearbox was removed, and welded up, then refit to the engine.

Work also started on the rear hubs, i removed one from the broken carrier to use as a test. the holes were welded up, then the face shall be machined flat again, and the center machined for the wheel center as well as being redrilled.

#

I also gave some parts to nathan25 as he's going to work his magic with them.

Rocker cover removed.

Next job is to start fixing the rear suspension, get it bolted up into the floorpan and make some fixed bars instead of the springs and dampers so i can get the height and wheel angles set up.

I'll be updating this thread every few days/week with progress as progress happens, but it's also on other forums, so you may want to check these too.

Wow this will be an intresting build thread.
Cheers matey
Err- holy sh*t!!!

I see your not affraid of taking on VERY involved projects!

Deffo gonna keep an eye on this one- could be an awesome piece o kit if it all comes together!:yup:
What matt said above:)
Well if you have the available £££- you could be the 1st;):dddc:
i have no available pounds as for some reason unknown, may i add, i never won the euromillions, or even the wee raffle:(
sheeshkebab, nice project.
Wowzas ! Will be keeping an eye on this thread !

You not finsished it yet?!!

Thats one hell of a project, I think I heard of someone doing a similar thing using an Impreza floor pan on something quite similar to a ZR, could have been a ZR/Fiesta/Corsa

Maybe I saw it at Trax?

Using an Evo should make it near bombproof!

There is a Cossied Corsa B and a few Focus' with Impreza running gear that i know of :)
Bit more progress with parts,

as the rear end had taken quite a hit, the hub carrier was broken (it had been welded when i got it, just to make it rollable), and most of the rear arms were bent and also the drive haft had come apart. Had a search around for the bits i needed and found them to be at extortionate prices. A friend who knows someone who rallies an evo then said he could get me all but one of the arms (the upper wishbone one), a drive shaft, and the complete hub/bearing carrier with hand brake cable and abs sensor complete for £150, they were from an earlier evo, so a few more miles, but the chap had just been keeping them as spares if he ever needed them. Steal imo!

A comparison between one of the original arms and its replacement.

Pic of the new bits (or old bits should i say).

Driveshaft ends are a bit different between the original and the replacement, the main thing i'll need to do is get the wheel speed reluctor ring swapped over, or the joint.

Next, the aux belt crank pulley had taken a bit of a bash,

The price from a dealer was close to the £200 mark, so i opted for this aluminimum one from ebay, £25, it's considerably smaller than the original, and isn't dampened, but i can change it later if need be.

I have also removed the AC compressor (it wont be going back on).

Another pulley that will need replacing as it's also a bit bent.

Managed to sell a few items too, the AC compressor, 90 after postage, the bilstein front struts 205 after postage.

What a project, good luck mate and keep us posted!
the o.e crank pulley looks very similar to mine and you can get undamped versions for my engine, however all the vag tuners insist not to use them as usually they fail in a big way, im not saying this is the case with evos but it might be worth looking into.

Ye, im aware of the stresses they can cause, I'm not intending on running this engine for too long before rebuilding or replacing it with another "fettled one"

Would that be a silly BHP Fettled one?:)

Oh and thanks for keeping the post updated:)

hopefully :D

and no problem, as much as i can say we do this for a living, we dont, and chances of something like this happening again to a "rover" are very slim due to the costs involved, so best to document it for all to see.
Thats what i wanted to hear:)

Maybe it will be ready for the Harrogate MG show in the summer:driving:

If it is, then i'll take it, even though it may get me some evil looks from some of the more die hard MG fans
