Poor "AC" on the V8 powered cars!

Poor AC on the V8 powered cars!

I’ve had this car just over a month and its been looked at 3 times for its AC. The problem is that there is nothing wrong with the AC according to MG.

WRONG there is, it just doesn’t work effectively. Consequently the design must be wanting in some way - see bottom of post!

Last night for example we drove 6 miles and the screens barely cleared with HI selected on the AC interface. This isn’t right, plus the noise at this level is unbearable. Or is my expectations after the previous cars fitted with AC too high?

To be very frank – I’m disappointed and this niggle is starting to annoy.

I have to say I always drive with the AC on and this is spoiling the enjoyment of the 260.

AC info, A new HEVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning) unit is fitted to the ZT 260. The new unit is a water-blend design featuring a dedicated electronic control unit to drive servo-motor valves to regulate the water flow around the heating circuit. This system has been refined to offer similar levels of response and control to the existing ZT’s acclaimed air-blending system. All models feature ATC (Automatic Temperature Control), using the familiar user-friendly interface of other ZT models.

How are the 260s holding out with their AC in this weather we are having just now?
Adequate is all I can say now, and certainly not as good as the ZT-T

Poor Jerry must be melting then. I do remember in my 75 the aircon was very good, and me being a northern lad I do like it a bit cooler than it is down here at the momment, I was suffering today with the heat:(
One bad comment from me is that the a/c fan under the bonnet is so very noisy.

It sounds as if the car is about to take off when that fan starts going. It masks the sound of the V8!

Are all ZT/75 a/c fans this noisy or is it just the 260's?
Yes, indeed they are - on all 75's

The fan is a large one, about 18" in diameter. Two smaller fans would be a better option.
Wrong oil spec for 260 aircon pumps

Some will have seen my "That belt again" thread. Got my 260 back last week at last after much nonesense when several aircon pumps were delivered without clutches. However, more to the point, the reason my dealer changed the pump was he had been told that several aircon pumps had been supplied with too much oil in them (something over 200mil) - the "normal" amount for this aircon pump in its none 260 applications. So they were told to ensure that the new pump had much less oil in - sorry can't remember the amount. Apparently the wrong oil amount can seriously effect aircon pump performance. Furthermore, it can cause aircon pump clutch slipping and hence my acc drive belt whiplash and snapping. In addition to a car in Harrogate, a hire car agency in Surrey with 3 260s had had similar problems. Have run the car fior 250 miles since the change and all is well so far. I wonder how many 260 pumps are out there with the wrong lube oil amounts? Maybe worth thinking about. As for cooling perf in the present hot spell - mine works OK too.:shout:

My AC is still not right.

The Climate Control temperature selectors are always on "LO" with the fan selected to my requirements.

If we take the pax side up to 21/22 on ocassions, it goes fully HOT (well the 260's verson of hot) and then there I cannot regain control until the engine is stopped and restarted.

I've done this a number of times to reset it (last time on our way from Knockhill on the M6).

OK, so the answer is another visit to the dealer - if it cannot be fixed then it's spoiling the enjoyment of an otherwise great car and we'll sell it and keep the EVO (not the other way round as orginally planned).

NB: Downside will be no towcar for the metro! :(

Just upgraded from a 190 to a 260 and I agree that the A/C doesn't seem as good in the 260. Work in central London, and last week the temp was 25/26 outside, and the A/C really had to work hard....

After 10 minutes in the 190 you could freeze half a cow!

Like your 190 description - but true - unfortunately!

Had a message form Max last night who went to the OXON meet of the MGOC! The car would not move out of freeze in 10 miles. This is the problem, and then once warm won't go cold.

If we can't get a satisfactory conclusion to this saga - we will sell it for a new ZT260SE (04), as I can't live without a decent Climate system or something else!
Are the 04 different in terms of the air con then?

my 04 seems to be resonable in terms of the operation not tried the heater too much yet but always find the seats do a better job of warming than the blower ever could.

AC performance is on a par with VW climatronic but not up there with Jag systems I have had in the past. Mind you the AC in the past 2 mercs i had was poor at best....
AC now up in smoke!

A new development to the AC story.....

Driving up the M11 on thursday night, big clouds of smoke coming from the car.... (always a tad embarrassing when you have just shot past everyone at warp factor 9..!)

MG assistance did their thing and the car is now back with the dealers. AA thought it was the steering fluid reservoir that ruptured but according to the dealers it was a burst pipe from the air con...

Apparently the fluid burns similar to brake or steering fluid.

Hopefully have it back for monday.

No, there have been no changes in performance. Basically the 260 A/C unit is a badly hacked unit. Fact is it will never work as good as the original; now I'm not saying some people wont find it acceptable, I am just saying it will not perform correctly.

I would recommend you see the failed part. When the original car was developed, there were loads of problems with packaging space for the A/C pipes - finally additional clamps were added to avoid damage to the A/C Hoses due to rubbing with various moving parts. Now I dont know the engine bay of the 260 at all, however I can imagine that there ain't much space in there.
Point being, it would probably be worth your while seeing exactly what the problem is and making sure it wasn't worn hoses, that may just wear again!

I know that this pipe has failed on a car with 5,000 miles (not mine I haste to add).

Maybe worth buying a spare hose for the worriers amongst us!

___________

Kaine I agree. Surprised all the other owners are hapy with their cars. Or could it just be mine?
True it is a bit cramped in there! Have seen the part still attached. Split at the clamp.

The on-going saga is that there are no spares for this - anywhere! Aparently they are going to try and get one from the production line, but I am being advised that it could take 7 days - 7 long days!

Have tried speaking with customer services at Longbridge but they are next to useless.....
Is this a problem? - When the car's warmed up, and the aircon is not on at all, there's a bit of warm/hot air coming out of the vents. I've never had a car with aircon before, so don't know if it's a regular thing!
Mine does the same, warm air out of vents with no aircon or heating on.
I close the centre vents when aircon not on!
Also foot wells get on occasions.
the air on mine is great until you really really thrash it then i guess heat soak takes over and seens to get warmer for a minute or too until you back off....

small price to pay for the noise though......

Well, we have swopped ZT's for a day with Martin Kernahan - chalk and cheese.

This one appears to have more power and the Climate works!

Wont go into the detail, however I would imagine the airmix doors aren't fully closed and warm air is leaking through. This is a problem for all airmix type A/C units, however usually can be compensated by the Control Panel software. If the A/C Panel software hasn't been changed for the 260, then maybe the higher engine temps are causing this problem.

To be honest, I would say that its only a problem if it bothers you. (I would guess MG would say the same)

Kaine
Thanks, I'll leave it then, if it's not causing any harm :)
