I love this!

Im building one for next year in the 750mc Stock hatch series as its dominated by saxo Vtrs at moment, im prepared to prove them wrong.

this is like copy of what i want done

ill keep an eye on this.
how much was the cage?
I`m not going to recommend anything but the best.

Rover 25 2004 international weld in roll cage from Cutom Cage. From cold drawn steel 607 £ + VAT

The best is same from T45 steel ( as mine ) 849 £ + VAT

Look www.customcages.co.uk ,there are also pictures about cages installed into the bare shell.
Maximum protection and max strenght is the key thing. Power without control is nothing. So invest safety first.

If you want to buy cheap, look from gallery pictures of my club friend rally/rallycross Sierra. He hit that tree at 100 km/h. The car did not bounce off the snow bank or the tree, just " sink " around the tree at once. Driver is very, very happy because he can soon walk again. Normal "club " cages are not enough, normal steel will give up in real situation.
Having had a few incidents in my rally career I will 100% agree with everything Jorma has said about cages. The absolute best professionally fitted is the only way to go. They all look pretty when just built but its how the look when you have been playing pinball with the tress that counts.

EG,

My first rally car used a Safety Devices Clubman cage, with door bars but only mounted to car on floor. My first proper off and the car was destroyed, roof so badly kinked, sills bent. 30-50mph into ditch and catching some tree stumps, ripped rear suspension off but car never went over.

Replacement was another FIAT, this time cage was made by a guy who made the cages for Ford Motorsport for the Escort/Sierra Cosworths. It was 50mm tubing multi pointed to screen pillars, rear suspsension, inner sills, B Post, best quality steel and many hours of careful work fitting/welding. Despite a few tree destroying and other assaults on scenery the basic shell was so damn strong you just replaced rattled panels. The difference in the handliung was incredible, it made the suspension work properly. Car won 98 British 1300 Championship and is still kicking about somewhere in Scotland now.

You will only ever reget saving money on a cage/shell.They should be considered as 1 thing.

The cage i went for was the Safety Devices multipoint weld in. It was the last kit available as far as i'm aware and was around £600. It came with forward triangulation too, but that's going in once the engine goes in. At the time the cage was put in, the old engine was in and had to stay in so i chose to do the forward triangulation after - made sense at the time.

If your going from a bare shell, then it's easy to do it all at once, but in my situation it's getting done in stages. New engine will need fabrication to get to fit, so there will be a lot of welding done in the engine bay area (seam welding etc) aswell as triangulation and engine mounts.

The project is taking longer than expected, but should be done by the middle of this year. It's my first project, so is a learning curve. It's coming together nicely i think though, even though progress is slow. Along with engine/box, there are Polycarb windows and new seats/belts to come. Then it is about ready bar a few little bits.

Thanks for your positive comments mate :)

hello roosie thought you where building a saxo for this year?
not got much to do on my mg zr just waiting for my engine to come back.
Great thread and some great advice from the Rallying guys.:)
You done anything else to this yet? Think we are now both banned off themgzr.co.uk lol
Building a rally car is very time-consuming operation. Grp N car around 300 hours, more tuned grp A or national B do allow so much modification that building hours are somewhere between 6 to 800 hours depending are you building also the engine and gearbox.

Stripping ZR for bare shell won`t take more than one long saturday for one "professional" mechanic. And it won`t cost anything but coffee and sandwiches.
The building work will start after donor car is stripped down to bare shell. So we are just starting the story.
I hope that this project do have also money enough to do it properly. so let`s be patient with boys.
