MG ZR EX258 ON TRACK FOR CATALUNYA - MGR Press Release

The MG ZR EX258 returns to the rally stage this weekend when it takes part in the 38th Rally Catalunya. The rally forms round two of the 2002 FIA Junior World Rally Championship.

With Gwyndaf Evans behind the wheel and co-driver Chris Patterson, the GSE Motorsport prepared MG will be looking for an improved performance from Monte Carlo when it crashed out on the third stage. Since Monte Carlo a new car has been built to compete at Catalunya. Further improvements have been made to the car and the team is looking to Catalunya as an opportunity to gain an increased knowledge of the car in this development year.

Commenting on recent testing developments, Gwyndaf said: "We had a positive test at MIRA and the engine has improved immensely in low-down power and durability. Whilst we haven't got a set-up for Catalunya we have learned a lot more about the MG Rally car."

Chris added: "We're really looking forward to Catalunya and hope the weather will be good to us - stay dry! Our aim is to get some more miles under our belt so we can further develop the car."

The event takes place 22-24 March and covers a total of 16 stages and a total distance of 394.98km - all tarmac.

Leg 1 - 6 stages - 176.72km
Leg 2 - 6 stages - 112.00kms
Leg 3 - 6 stages - 106.26km

Oh Dear:(

Looks like Mr Evans has gone off on SS11 and has retired from the rally.
I dont know about you lot but this rallying malarky hasn't really captured the imagination-is it time to pull the plug??????

I've been thinking of closing this sub-Forum and/or the pages on site because of the lack of interest (just look at the number of posts in this Forum).

Why is this, I'm sure "MG Sport & Racing" are asking the same questions?

Personally, Evans hasn't got the public relations hype that MG or for that matter we need (he never has). MG need to find someone with commitment and youth.

MG should stick with it though, I'm sure there are plenty of privateers with the necessary budget that would buy tuning kits or "factory"cars. As mentioned, what we need is a young blood in there - now Rob Oldaker - just give me a call!

The news bulletin from MGR on Gwyndaf & Catalunya!

Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson have retired from the Rallye Catalunya - round two of the 2002 Junior World Rally Championship - after their MG ZR EX258 was struck by a problem with a steering component 2km into stage 11 of the high-speed tarmac rally. Catalunya was just the second event for the brand-new rally car. The GSE Motorsport-built machine, in this development year, completed over 200kms of stages on the rally.
"We’re disappointed to be out the rally," said Gwyndaf, "but on a positive note we’ve done a good few stage miles and we’ve now got a solid foundation to build on. I feel if we’d kept going we could have had a decent result, but we’ve learnt an awful lot on this rally."
Stage 11 was the eighth competitive stage of the event. Three earlier stages were cancelled due to the number of Spanish rally fans lining the route - many of whom took to cheering on the MG to the delight of the crew.
Next round of the JWRC is the testing Acropolis Rally in Greece, starting on June 13 2002.

Lets remember that this year / season is meant to be a development year. I thought that the idea was to develop the car and the sell them off to younger drivers who want to compete in the JWRC or BRC

Why don't MGR run 2 cars? From a development angle it would speed things up. From a commercial sponsorship angle it would increase exposure.
Could this happen later in the season - perhaps selling the current car to a privateer as they have done with the EX259.

I think the main reason Gwyndaf Evans was offered the EX258 drives for this year is his skill as a development driver. Add to that his previous experience with Gordon Spooner Engineering (with whom he won the British Rally Championship in an Escort Maxi Kit Car in 1996) and you can see why he was chosen for the job.

It's still too early days to cancel the programme (and this sub-forum!) - I personally feel we should certainly stick with the team and offer our full support. With a further four rounds remaining (Greece, Germany, Italy & UK) and the rumour of the occasional British Champinship outing, there is still plenty of time for the programme to be a success.

At present the Junior WRC certainly seems to be of lower importance to MG Sport & Racing than Le Mans or the BTCC, but lets not turn our backs on them too soon.

Rally drivers do it between the trees!

Lets support the team rather than closing the forum.
If the team know they have support they will be encouraged, if they see forums like this closing and looseing support they will loose heart all together.
Lets remember that MG has a long heritage in rallying and not only racing its an important part of the brand.

Forum and site content STAY open - thanks for the feedback. :D

Read the interviews on MGR's site and they are reasonably upbeat!

Further news found this evening on the www.gsemotorsport.com website :

"GSE in search for budding star

GSE have revealed that they will be setting out in a search for young blood after the Rallye Catalunya. The team is looking for a driver to contest the Junior World Championship in a MG ZR Super1600 in 2003, so the stakes are sky high.

The Championship should be within reach for the team, and with young drivers like Loeb and Duval paving the way for the next generation, the Junior World Championship looks set to be the 'shop window' for all budding World Champions."

It looks like it was only ever supposed to be a one year contract for Mr Evans anyway - as I said in an earlier post, I'm sure he was originally employed as a development driver in readiness for a later championship assault by a less experienced, but maybe faster driver.

If you do take a look at the above mentioned site, you might be interested to see what an MG ZR EX258 looks like after an argument with some Monte Carlo scenery - just follow the 'photos' section!

Keep the faith!
