A little teaser...

Who can name all 7 drivers that competed in the 'works' Group A MG Metro / Metro Turbos during the 1983/84 seasons?

NOTE 1 : Do not include Steve Soper as when he competed in 1985 in a one-off drive, the car was a private entry!

NOTE 2 : Do include the British / German / European Touring Car Championships though!

:angst Good luck Jim!

Do you need some clues?

Jim,

I was wondering when you would reply! Would clues help, or would you prefer to solve without any further help?

Are you a 'squaddie' then? or is that an insult?

You might have been in Germany at the time of the German Touring Car Championship entries then?

Start surfing then Jim! :type:

:angst Good luck!

David
PS - I'll :beerchug if you get / or anyone else gets ALL 7 - without any further clues!

Yes, I was an Ex Squaddie. Came out some 10 years ago.

I might have to have some clues.

Me thinks Rodger Saunders, ???????? Bell, Colin Pearcy, Richard Longman, Alan Curnow, Neil McGrath,Rene Metgeor Alan Cudini. There's a few wild cards in there I know.

Jim

You picked a good one here David  But haven't given up yet.

Surfed on Metro sites. Plent y of info re the 6R4 project but not a great deal on the metro touring cars.

Jim,

I have a plethora of clues waiting next to my keyboard - just give me the nod and I will be more than happy to help.

Probably should have made it a touch easier, and as Chris Tarrant says 'It's only easy when you know the answer!'.

Haven't you got a friend you could ring?...

David

Sorry David.

Don't ask me - I was either in Scotland or down in Cornwall. Missed scene. Too busy off to warmer climes or windsurfing - those were the days. Watched Rallying on TV + the Ford Cossie and SD1 boys in the BTCC.

Plus I never had the enthusaism to watch the Meeetro, unless it had V6 in the boot. Always remember Mal Wilson following me in a our 205Gti on route to a SS in the "Rally of Cornawall". Now that Metro WAS a real car!

Some clues...

Who can name all 7 drivers that competed in the 'works' Group A MG Metro / Metro Turbos during the 1983/84 seasons?

Right then Jim, Jerry, Kevin - here goes...

a) This driver was an all time great, more connected to another form of motorsport, and now sadly no longer with us.

b) This chap was 'touring car' through and through. He later went on to drive in the BTCC for Mazda and Peugeot amongst others.

c) This driver was a British F1 contender, up until several years ago. He is still involved in F1, but not driving!

d) Don't know much about this chap. British. Several touring car drives, but never really made it to a works drive. Think he only raced the car once, as a second driver in the Tourist Trophy.

e) Brother of (c). Maybe former Metro Challenge Champion aswell.

f) This driver later went on to race Rover Vitesse in the European Touring Car C'ship, but used the Metro Turbo in the German C'ship at Hockenheim.

g) Another driver who was (and still is!) 'touring car' through and through! Loads of drives over the years, also very keen on bikes - road use only I think. Former Metro Challenge Champion aswell.

Well how do you feel now? I apologise if it was somewhat difficult, I didn't think you would get 2-3 of them, but there are some obvious ones above!

Good luck!

David

PS - It's fun setting teasers, isn't it Jim?!

Kevin,

Nice try, but only 3/7 correct! Bit more scratching of heads required.

Any advance on 3, Jim or Jerry?

Getting there!

Hi Jim,

To be totally fair to Kevin, I'll mark yours in the same unhelpful and sadistic way. An improvement, with 4/7 answers correct! Nice try.

Let me know when you have had enough, and I will let you and Kevin know which of your individual answers are correct.

Still three to find. Come on Jerry, if I didn't know you any better I'd say you were glued to the Le Mans updates all night! So now is your opportunity to show us your knowledge!

Regards,

David

Sorry Jim!

Nope!

Never heard of the first (Sean Walker) so you've got one on me I'm afraid!

Colin Pearcy did indeed acquire one of the cars for his own personal collection, which at the time comprised a Bastos SD1, a pre-production MG Metro 6R4, assorted Sebring MGC GTS', aswell as the Computervision MG Metro Turbo you mention. Pearcy used it as a privateer entry in the BTCC during the late 1980s, but not too sure if he contested a complete C'ship or just odd rounds.

So is that it then? Have you all done, or would you prefer I wait till after the weekend Jim. Somebody at Le Mans should know!

I've decided, you can all wait till Jim comes back from France - with the remaining 3 answers!

Any more guesses Kevin?

Regards,

David

The answers...

a) This driver was an all time great, more connected to another form of motorsport, and now sadly no longer with us... TONY POND.

As I’m sure you are all aware, Austin Rover Motorsport utilised this great man’s talent in touring car racing during the mid-Eighties, whilst they were developing the Metro 6R4. TP debuted a Daily Express / Unipart sponsored Group A MG Metro Turbo in Rd 4 of the 1983 Trimoco BTCC at Brands Hatch, and continued to use the car for the remainder of the season. He also raced in that years’ Canon Tourist Trophy at Silverstone.

b) This chap was 'touring car' through and through. He later went on to drive in the BTCC for Mazda and Peugeot amongst others... PATRICK WATTS.

Team-mate to Tony Pond during 1983. Started at Rd 3 of the 1983 Trimoco BTCC at Thruxton in a Group A MG Metro. Upgraded to Turbo specification from Rd 4 onwards. Used it for the remainder of 1983 season, including the TT at Silverstone which he shared the entry with Pond. Also continued with the team in 1984 with a Computervision example, only until all Austin Rover entries withdrew mid-season. Then returned for the 1984 Istel Tourist Trophy at Silverstone.

c) This driver was a British F1 contender, up until several years ago. He is still involved in F1, but not driving!... MARTIN BRUNDLE.

Joined the above two drivers at the final round of the 1983 Trimoco BTCC at Silverstone, in an attempt to stop the Alfa Romeo GTV6 of Andy Rouse winning the C’ship ouright in favour of their Rover Vitesse team-mates. It was all irrelevant several months later when all the Rovers and Metros were thrown out of the C’ship over illegalities!

d) Don't know much about this chap. British. Several touring car drives, but never really made it to a works drive. Think he only raced the car once, as a second driver in the Tourist Trophy... ROB HALL.

Contested the 1983/84 BTCC in a Ford Escort RS1600i, but was drafted into the team for the 1984 Istel Tourist Trophy at Silverstone, sharing the Nº 51 entry with Patrick Watts.

e) Brother of (c). Maybe former Metro Challenge Champion aswell... ROBIN BRUNDLE.

Team-mate to Patrick Watts (during the 1984 BTCC season) until the teams’ withdrawal. Then contested the 1984 Istel Tourist Trophy at Silverstone. Brother of Martin.

f) This driver later went on to race Rover Vitesse in the European Touring Car C'ship, but used the Metro Turbo in the German C'ship at Hockenheim... ARMIN HAHNE.

More renowned for his *** 635 performances at Spa and his Rover Vitesse appearances. Used a Massa sponsored MG Metro Turbo twice during 1984 in the German Touring Car Championship. At Hockenheim he retired, but at the next round at Zolder he finished an amazing 4th Overall.

g) Another driver who was (and still is!) 'touring car' through and through! Loads of drives over the years, also very keen on bikes - road use only I think. Former Metro Challenge Champion aswell... TIM HARVEY.

Former Metro Challenge Champion. Drafted into the team to share an entry with Robin Brundle in the 1984 Istel Tourist Trophy at Silverstone.

That was fun wasn't it? Look forward to the next time!...

Regards,

David
