My 02 zs180 with 118k has just developed an intermittent inlet rattle on tickover, also more noticeable is the vectra v6/ scooby induction roar when doing so... took the car down to m&g mg specialists at bradford to check out, i asked him about the vis valves and could these be the cause he told me no its always the manifold thats the problem and he has never replaced the vis valves !

Im not knocking the guy as he is very helpful but im certain its one of the valves not operating correctly as it is only an intermittent problem ( but does rattle slightly on tickover sometimes) i took the lower vis valve out to inspect (power valve ? ) and tbh it was very clean with minor oil contamination so popped it back in.

Problem still remains... slight tapping but not always and accompainied with a vectra v6 / scooby induction roar... then it reverts back to how it should sound... performance seems largely unaffected tho !

Sorry for the long post but this car does regular long hauls so i dont fancy it leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere

It's worthwhile testing the VIS motors. One of mine is squeeky clean on the inside but stops working intermittantly, according to the VIS indicators I fitted. There's a diagram knocking around somewhere for how to test the motors outside of the engine. Usually fail down to bad solder joints.

If you need a new plenium (inlet) we offer special rates to forum members.
They are consumable items designed to last 60K only, the vis are easy to change but will not cure a rattle.

What about unplugging both VIS motors to see if it still rattles?
Well this is what intrigues me... it is an intermittent problem which makes me think its not the actual manifold itself as it would do it continuosly i think, but also the cars power does not seem to be down ( it flies tbh ) but then again the guy at m&g told me the butterflies in the inlet can stick... and depending at what angle they stick can affect power.

so i dunno really its behaving itself for now... would the cold weather affect the butterflies in the manifold ??
