Well, that's the fuel tank fuel filter clip fitted. There was no sign of rotation, so it clipped straight on. It is only a 30 minute job and for peace of mind I would go along with everyone else who recommended carrying out the mod, in saying it is worthwhile. Disconnect the battery first, though.

The seal is a little bit fiddly to get back in and I must admit I panicked for a second when I saw wires on the bottom of the filter, thinking I had unscrewed the pump, but OE_cosgrove's bulletin and Roger Parker's article made it clear I was on the right side. Thanks to Paul and Roger.

Interestingly, stuck onto the cover plate was a label with my chassis number and the spring and damper settings for the suspension. I don't suppose I'll ever need this information, but now I know where it is.

Yup, that label was a godsend back in the days when I was in the network, ordering replacement roadsprings was fun without that label!

You need to order the small plastic clip from your dealer.
It is part number WJC000230Y and cost me £4.34 inc vat.

The filter is in the left hand side of the fuel tank, under a cover plate, beneath the rear seat squab.
There is an article on the MGOC website on how to replace the fuel pump by Roger Parker, which also mentions removing the filter. oe_cosgrove posted a bulletin on removing the filter and installing the clip on this forum, which I can't find at the moment. Maybe someone can help.
Good luck, it is a fairly straightforward task if you follow the instructions.

..bought clip today. £5.30 inc. VAT. The service man at Farnells Guiseley thought it was a rip off.

Nice man though he gave me a copy of the MG-Rover release regarding the clip to help me fit it.
