Engine spluttered and died

Hello again after long absence from boards. Although I have lurked from time to time.

Anyhow, a problem has arisen with the 180. Engine suddenly became unresponsive, lost power and eventually cut out. Just as it might if I'd run out of fuel. This happened while on the move after a long hot drive through traffic. Luckily I was within sight of home and managed to limp her to safety. I was able to restart, but each time the engine would start misfiring after a few seconds and quit. So I let the engine cool off and tried again. This time it started normally and idled to full running temperature but I couldn't reproduce the problem. Only noticeable issue was that the rev needle was indicating 800 RPM which is lower than I'm used to seeing.

What do you all think? Air filter's a bit dirty but not enough to produce blockage. Any other obvious things I should be checking for?

EDIT: Just to add, It passed emissions test at last MOT couple of weeks ago.

I'd start with reading live data to make sure it's all in spec.

Yeah. I'd have to call someone in for that. Was hoping description of symptoms might flag up some known issues. Engine misfires and stalls after long drive. Attempt to restart results in misfire and stall. Once engine has cooled down, starts up fine again. Thought that might arouse some specific suspicions.
There are hints in your info but live data would help, a cheap OBD2 reader from ebay would work.

I did have a brief gander on ebay. Saw this one. A bit dear but the cheaper ones aren't always compatible.

No previous experiences with using these devices but willing to give it a go if I can get the right kit.
At that sort of money you may as well buy a www.pscan.eu
Have you checked the earth straps ?
IIRC one of them is pone to rubbing causing a short circuit & odd engine behaviour

thanks. Where is that located on this car? Is there more than one?
While checking battery leads I noticed the clamp was loose on my positive post. Not sure what issues that might cause.
