Noooooo! Go see Lates on here
I've seen most of the recommended garages on the forum. Unfortunately, like "the only gay in the village" I seem to be the only zed owner in the South East. Can you believe I've never seen another Mk2 Zed on the street? Lates? I thought that was a kind of creamy coffee! :) So, where's the nearest branch to London? The nearest good MG specialist I know is in Cambridgeshire.

Lates cant be too far. I travelled up from S E Wales. You can't be that much further away. Lovely area too. Bought quality belts and water pump off ebay and he fitted.

I can only say that I would recommend Steve @ British Legends. He is based in Southend so depends how much of a pain that would be to get there but he is very good at what he does and very good on price.

He looks after my 180 all the time, top bloke.

May be worth a look.

Craig.

Cheers all. I'll look into it. I'll have to start getting serious about this belt change thing soon. Have to wait for some cash to flow first!

To give them credit, I dropped by Mr Clutch today to check out their creds. Young chap rushed out immediately to see how he could help. Told him I had trouble engaging gear (without letting on that I already knew what the problem was). He spent a few minutes checking out the pedal and bracket set up, hydraulics, etc and correctly identified that there was nothing mechanically wrong and that it was a design weakness that was causing my problems.

He didn't try to con me into buying a new clutch like two small garages I visited before and told me honestly there was nothing they could do for me. But he did suggest looking around for a modified kit or taking out the carpet to give the pedal more travel room.

So as far clutches go... I'd rate Mr Clutch for efficiency and honesty. At least I would with this particular branch.

But how many FULL 180 belt changes have they done? Try them out to see if they know their stuff in relation to what is involved.

Possibly less than a dozen nationwide. I wasn't about to hand my zed over them for a belt change anyway.

100 miles is a bit of a way! What if there's a complication and they can't complete the job same day?

There won't be. These two guys are the bees knees. I had full belt change, water pump, uprated metal thermostat housing oil filter and oat anti freeze. I supplied Unipart Belt Kit & water pump. Lates supplied oil, filter oat anti freeze, the cam end caps and bolts. Started about 9am and I was heading home by 1.30pm.

I will be going back if I need anything else major and for future belt changes.

Ive been looking at Lates website and looks good. But £600 incl parts is a contrast to a chap in Derby who does them for £450 (alternator belt extra). But has anyone used them before? His webstie is 'Dave MG Mobile Mechanic' - or partner is 'Kayleigh' who works with him and has promoted ther work on .Org (apparently)
I spoke to Kayleigh once who was helpful with info on what they do. They do full service including plugs too but i couldn't see how that would be right since the 180 has iridium plugs that are about £100 from where I've seen so far which last 60k miles. So i'm wondering if they're using the right plugs if the job is that cheap?
I know tcb180 put that he got parts he purchased himself fitted by Lates for £342 so if I could do that and get parts via vulcuan racing for example and save £100 that would be great. Just depends if I have all thats needed. I got the list off another post but im sure Lates can advise me.
Im also getting a quote from a friend of a friend who is ex MGR technician and he may have the gear locking tools. So fingers crossed fopr that one as it might be a better option. But again getting all the correct parts might be too much of a headache?? lol

I used Lates for my 6yr service on the ZS 2.5yrs ago. He came highly recommended on the forums and he certainly didn't disappoint. It was worth the drive just to get to him for the cambelt change considering dealers are quoting £1000. Lates did the whole job in half a day and I supplied my own oil.

I have a Mr Clutch 2 minutes walk from work and they do most of my MOTs and some minor jobs when I CBA, they are better than the place between work and them who wouldn't be out of place under the arches in the 50's.....

I wouldn't use them for anything complicated.

Dave and Kayleigh have been around for a while, I'd google or yahoo them.

Personally I'd use MJS, he does most things mobile but will only do KV6 belts at his garage due to the complexity, he is in Worthing.

I'd be wary of using a mr clutch just as much as i wouldnt trust my car with kwik fit / motosave / ats etc..

KV6 plugs from xpart are £9 each anyone paying £100 for 6 plugs is being seriously shafted.
