Like all Alfa's, when they are working and you're on a good road with nobody around you its quite a beautiful experience.

They do handle really nicely and ok they do have their problems but only as much as MGR cars.

My advice is to find one locally and drive it. You'll either love it or hate it, the driving position isn't for everyone (its designed purely for the Italian frame) and some people think its horribly uncomfortable.

I personally prefer the handling of a ZS but any Alfa is pretty much up there for B Road fun.

I had an 'S' plate 156 Alfa 2 litre T Spark.

I really liked it, had a lovely interior and was a very comfortable drive. I had no mechanical problems but only had the car for just over a year. :)

Thats exactly the engine I am going for. 2003 model though. Whats the mpg like? Does it handle ok? I'm not looking for a sports car (I might get the mgf Trophy for that as well), but is it ok for a saloon?

Parker's reckon that the electrics can be a source of gremlins, and the clutch is about £600 (!!!) to replace.
Personally, I prefer the looks of the ZS on the outside, but the interior of an alfa does look to be a nice place to be...

Yeah thanks mate. I know I am taking my chances a little but the money I am going to spend is small and that's half the fun of this kind of "bangernomics".

I love the mk2 ZS - always will but its a case of been there done that. The Alfa has mixed opinions from people on its looks and I like that. Makes it interesting.

The suspension was fine tuned to give excelent ride and handling on European roads. Unfortunately ours are an utter disgrace and they can catch out a 156s handling set up. However there are several suspension specialists who do a package of different shockers and suspension rubbers which sort that problem out, and they easliy hold the road as well as a ZS without been overly harsh like the ZS is. Petrol ones can be had for peanuts. Be ultra carefull of buying V6s, many suffered cambelt failures early in life and the engines are never the same afterwards. Lovely cars. Getting on a bit now though and the diesels tend to have massive mileages, shame as that's what I'd go for. Petrols can have the problem of owners letting them run low on oil early on (they use quite a bit) and this leads to bottom end problems later.

I don't think the older 2.0TS is too bad, the JTS was the main one for that problem. Shame as the JTS is supposed to be smooth and it's 165bhp.

Hmm I just checked the link and it's the JTS by the looks of it? I'd be careful. If it's been looked after it will be ok.

I think the design and the interior of the 156 is the best feature, the italian's have class when it comes too this. Reading up the 2 litre T Spark does 32 mpg. :)

Take a look at this link Paul, alot more about the car here:

Yeah cheers all,

I've done my research and they don't seem to be as unreliable as people make out (a bit like our MG's)

I'm going up to Liverpool tomorrow to buy a MGF 160 Trophy as well so will end up with ZR 1.4, MGF Trophy 160 and maybe and old Alfa..... Lucky old me
